How It Works

Advair Inhaler contains two active ingredients, which are:

Fluticasone is a steroid, which inhibits immune system response. As it's administered directly to the lungs, side effects associated with systemic steroid use are very unlikely to happen. However, patients should be sure to rinse out the mouth with water after each dose to prevent thrush or other mouth infections.

Salmeterol is a long-acting beta2 agonist, compared to the common rescue treatment albuterol, which is a short-acting beta2 agonist. Patients should take care to avoid using other long-acting beta2 agonists with Advair Inhaler; too much of this medication can have detrimental effects. Other common long-acting versions are formoterol and bambuterol.

Dosage & Administration

Some patients notice improvements after the first dose, but most will need to wait around one week before significant improvement is seen.

As a maintenance inhaler, Advair Inhaler should be taken every day regardless of the presence or absence of symptoms. Using the inhaler sporadically will not produce good results. Rescue inhalers should continue to be used as-needed.

Some individuals find that Advair does little or nothing for them, even when used as directed for several weeks or months. For unclear reasons some individuals simply don't respond to some medications. Different active ingredients may help, or trying a non-steroidal inhaler such as tiotropium bromide.
