Advair Inhaler (fluticasone, salmeterol) is used as a maintenance inhaler to reduce the frequency and severity of asthma or COPD attacks, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It is not a rescue inhaler; while dependency on rescue inhalers may be greatly reduced, one should still be kept on hand in case an attack does happen.

Patients planning to buy Advair Inhaler should be aware that this product is distinct from Advair Diskus, which is perhaps more widely known. Both products contain the same ingredients but do have some differences:

  • Advair Inhaler delivers aerosol propelled by HFA to administer the medication to the lungs.
  • Advair Diskus delivers a fine powder and is largely dependent on the patient's ability to breathe it in to disperse it in the lungs.

In theory both products provide the same benefit, but some patients prefer one over the other. Many buy Advair Inhaler over the Diskus simply for the familiarity of using an inhaler. Unless instructed otherwise by a doctor, it is largely a matter of personal preference.

Note that both products are available in a range of strengths; be sure to buy Advair Inhaler or Advair diskus in the prescribed strength.

How It Works

Advair Inhaler contains two active ingredients, which are:

  • Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that inhibits immune response to allergens and irritants, thus reducing the inflammation that leads to restricted airways.
  • Salmeterol is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist (LABA) bronchodilator that relaxes and widens the airways, reducing symptoms of an attack.

Together these two ingredients can provide a tremendous difference in patients with breathing difficulties. Both are long-acting, preventing the lungs from overreacting to allergens or irritants while ensuring airways are kept relaxed and open.

Fluticasone is a steroid, which inhibits immune system response. As it's administered directly to the lungs, side effects associated with systemic steroid use are very unlikely to happen. However, patients should be sure to rinse out the mouth with water after each dose to prevent thrush or other mouth infections.

Salmeterol is a long-acting beta2 agonist, compared to the common rescue treatment albuterol, which is a short-acting beta2 agonist. Patients should take care to avoid using other long-acting beta2 agonists with Advair Inhaler; too much of this medication can have detrimental effects. Other common long-acting versions are formoterol and bambuterol.

Similarly, if Advair Inhaler is not providing sufficient results, patients should consult a doctor about increasing dosage. Buying Advair Inhaler at a higher dose strength is much more beneficial---and less risky---than taking more inhalations of a lower-dose version.

Dosage & Administration

Advair Inhaler comes in a metered-dose inhaler; once the meter reads 000 it can no longer be counted on to deliver full doses of medication. Be sure to buy a new Advair Inhaler before the meter gets to 000!

New inhalers will need to primed before first use. Simply actuate the inhaler 4 times into the air.

To use Advair Inhaler, patients age 12 and up should:

  • Shake the inhaler well before use.
  • Exhale fully.
  • Holding the inhaler to the mouth, inhale deeply as the inhaler is actuated.
  • Wait at least one minute before administering a second inhalation.
  • Rinse mouth with water when finished.

Doctors will advise to take 1 inhalation twice per day or 2 inhalations twice per day. A total of 4 inhalations per day should not be exceeded.

Some patients notice improvements after the first dose, but most will need to wait around one week before significant improvement is seen.

As a maintenance inhaler, Advair Inhaler should be taken every day regardless of the presence or absence of symptoms. Using the inhaler sporadically will not produce good results. Rescue inhalers should continue to be used as-needed.

Some individuals find that Advair does little or nothing for them, even when used as directed for several weeks or months. For unclear reasons some individuals simply don't respond to some medications. Different active ingredients may help, or trying a non-steroidal inhaler such as tiotropium bromide.
